Evolution of Islam in Japan (Professional Learning Circle)

先週の日曜日、ＩＩＵＭの主に院生を主要メンバーとするProfessional Learning Circleという研究会で、日本のイスラーム史の概説について発表してきました。個人的にも非常に興味のある内容だったので、良い機会を得たと思い、発表させていただくことにしました。彼らも、日本や日本のイスラームの容共について大変興味があるので、熱心に耳を傾けてくれたように思います。

The last Sunday, I had a presentation about the history of Islam in Japan in the Professional Learning Circle, that is a studying seminar organized by graduate students of IIUM. I have been interested in the history of Islam in Japan since I started to study Islam, so I had an wonderful opportunity to research the topic and present it. The audience listened to my presentation carefully because they also have an academic interest about Japan itself and Islam in Japan.

最初に提出した発表タイトルは、単に「日本イスラーム史」だったのですが、代表を務めている友人が「日本におけるイスラームの展開」というタイトルに変えてくれました。原語は"evelution"だったので、何となくダーウィンの進化論をイメージしてしまったので、ちょっと大丈夫と電話で連絡して確認してみましたが、注目を引くためにもこれくらいがいいという彼の提案だったので任せることにしました。取り上げた内容は、以下のような形になります。

The title was just "The History of Islam in Japan," when I submitted to my friend. However, my friend who is a director of this circle changed it to "The Evolution of Islam in Japan" for me. In fact, the term evolution made me imagine Dawin's one, so I called him and asked him about it. According to his suggestion, the title is better because that would be more attractive to others. The content I explained is following:

内容として、日本人の聴衆がいたならばそれほど目新しくはなかったかもしれません。ただ、日本について、ほとんど知らないということを想定し、簡略な構成を組むことにしました。大枠については、ある程度は理解してもらえたのではないかと思います。私の専門が宗教学ということもあり、日本人の宗教意識調査などを使用しながら、日本人の宗教観の特徴を描き出し、そのうえでイスラームと日本との関わりを論じました。質問は、私の予想を裏切って、前半の「新宗教」にかなり偏りました（個人的信条から、「新宗教」と形容することが好きでないのですが、学術用語としては定着していますので用いることにしました）。恐らく、幕末に登場した「新宗教」の一神教的性格に関心を抱いたのだと思います。パワーポイントを初めて使用したということもありますが、準備段階で色々と勉強することができ、実りある発表となりました。

Concerning the content, that would have not so imaginative if there had been Japanese audience. I supposed the audience does not know Japan well, then constructed a simple structure. I think they could understand the framework easily. Furthermore, my academic field is Religious Studies, so I described the characteristics of religious view for Japanese by using the statistics, and argued the relationship between Islam and Japan. After that, the audience asked me questions about "new religion" (I do not prefer calling "new religion" because of my belief, but I use the term here because that is well-known in the academic field) in the first part though I did not imagine it. Maybe, they felt intriguing its monotheistic characteristics that happened in the end of pre-modern era. I used Microsoft Power Point for the first time. Though the preparation, I could learn Islam a lot and have a interesting presentation.
